COMMISSIONING FOR NET ZERO ENERGY

Challenge

ASU pledged to reach zero greenhouse gas emissions from campus operations by 2025. As part of that effort, the Student Pavilion on the Tempe campus is ASU’s  first attempt and [potentially] Arizona’s largest Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB). An NZE certification is received when a building produces as much energy as it uses on an annual basis. Click here to read more about the Net Zero Energy Building.

Solution

Documenting this achievement requires monitoring the overall energy usage and production from a variety of sources within and outside the building. In addition, different groups at ASU needed this information to troubleshoot and finetune the building systems.

GLHN’s Cx team prepared and implemented the measurement and verification plan for two years following construction until an internal Measurement & Verification Champion could step up. The Engineers of Record re-calibrate the energy model to reflect actual operating conditions based on the data we collected and analyzed.
