Architecture and engineering design of the Sloth Exhibit at the Reid Park Zoo

This 390 SF habitat features an indoor and outdoor living space for a Linne’s Two-Toed Sloth. The two-toed sloth has very specific temperature, humidity, lighting and recreation requirements and the project was designed to directly support their needs as well as the needs of their caregivers. Two-toed sloths spend most of their lives hanging upside down from tree branches and sleeping. To mimic their natural habitat, the ceiling is covered in a metal grate with skylights above and tree branches span across the room. Additionally, both indoor and outdoor bedding areas were included. A keeper room houses the necessary mechanical equipment and a kitchen for food preparation. To accommodate visitors, two large viewing windows were installed.
GLHN provided architectural design as well as mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering for the exhibit.
