Completed in 2015, the Science and Health Building provides modern research space and science teaching facilities in a highly sustainable facility. GLHN’s Joyce Kelly, LEED BD+C, led the certification process for the project team. One fifth of SHB’s LEED Gold certification was based on water efficiency – a recognized high priority in Flagstaff and Northern Arizona. The team achieved all water efficiency points including exemplary performance and regional priority credits by reducing potable water use by 78%, incorporating and using reclaimed water for flush-fixture usage, and temporary irrigation of water-wise, native landscaping. The light pollution reduction credit was obtained by using full cut-off, amber colored, LED lighting -satisfying Flagstaff Astronomers’ need to protect their observatory from lighting interference.
